Apple Could Be Looking To Launch A Podcast Subscription Service

Right now, the podcasts you access from Apple are pretty much free. However, to better compete with Spotify and to attract more podcasters to its platform, it seems that Apple could be planning on launching their own podcast subscription service, according to a report from The Information (paywall).

Apple has long offered users the ability to listen to podcasts through its Podcast app available on both iOS and Mac. However, despite it having been around for so long, Apple has never really attempted to try and monetize it, but if this report is accurate, that could change with this new subscription service.

Podcasts have been ramping up in popularity over the years, and Spotify made a huge acquisition not too long ago when they managed to convince popular podcast host and UFC commentator Joe Rogan to create podcasts exclusive to its platform. By monetizing podcasts, it could encourage more people to create podcasts and join Apple’s platform.

Apple could also spin it in such a way where more “premium” podcasts are available through a subscription service. The company already has several subscription services under its belt, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they were to add one more to the list. There is no word on when this service will launch, but if it were to be announced, it would most probably be at WWDC 2021 which is hosted in the middle of the year.
